Here we are the last week, the last photo challenge of 2021! We’re rolling into 2022 with some changes for the 2022 Trevor Carpenter PhotoChallenge.

Jeanie and Tonya are taking a breather for 2022. I’d like to extend a huge thank you to both of them for their great contributions here at the Trevor Carpenter PhotoChallenge.

On with this week’s challenge!

THE WORD: BOUNDARIES

I chose the word BOUNDARIES for this final challenge. Once again, within reason, you have total creative freedom over the word BOUNDARIES. Use your dictionary and your thesaurus (Synonyms / Antonyms) to come up with creative interpretations. Boundaries can be physical or not, for example, the boundaries as expectations of what’s permissible in a child’s behavior. Physical BOUNDARIES can also be large and tangible like geographical borders just like they can be small, something like the threshold of a door.

THE TECHNICAL PART: LONG EXPOSURES

From a technical perspective, you can shoot in visible color or IR and you may submit in color or B&W. You decide what best suits your subject. However, it must be a LONG EXPOSURE. Your long exposure can vary tremendously based on your subject. It can be a short long exposure (1/30th – 1/100th) for a motion blur just like it can be a long ten plus second exposure to smooth out flowing water or waves.

EXAMPLES

I created a quick little video explaining how I created the long exposure VS a regular image. I also cover a bit of the gear choice addressing camera stability and precautions to minimize the impact of sea mist on your gear.

The image directly below is the result of a 20-second exposure using a variable ND filter, a tripod and a remote to trigger the camera in an effort to maximize stability. The image was taken at 80mm – f/32 – ISO 64.

The image below is a great example of how you can interpret the theme word BOUNDARIES in everyday life. The road and the cars for a boundary between each side of the road, the sidewalks. The rapid lateral movement of the vehicles creates a blur while in contrast, the people are more or less still, thus appearing clearly in the image!

YOUR CHALLENGE SUMMARY

It’s pretty simple. Your final image has to be a brand new image created for this challenge submitted from December 26, 2021, and at the latest January 2, 2022.

TOOLS NEEDED

• Tripod or other method of stabilizing camera RECOMMENDED
• IOS APP or ANDROID APP if using a Smartphone
• ND, VND or other method of reducing light RECOMMENDED
• Wired or Wireless remote to trigger camera RECOMMENDED

IT MUST CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS

1. Based on a creative interpretaion of the word Boundaries (Synonyms / Antonyms)
2. Must be a long exposure from a quick motion blur to a multi secont exposure suitable for your choice of subject.
3. Image may be in color or B&W and can be captured in either visible light or the IR Spectrum.
4. Please remember to comment on at least FIVE photo submissions this week by answering the question “why?” in your comments. In other words, “why do I like (or not like) this photo?” or “why did this photo catch my eye?”
