WEEK 43 Halloween Challenge – Spooky Silhouette

It’s Halloween, not just any Halloween, it’s our 10th Anniversary Spooky Silhouette Halloween Photo Challenge. As the years go on I’ve tried to keep the Halloween Challenges unique and challenging. One year we even ran the Halloween Photo Challenge as a parallel challenge running the entire month of October.

This year I fell upon an image I took in 2012 with the Halloween Challenge in mind. It’s kind of a secret vault revelation, resurrecting an idea for a never-published Halloween Challenge.

2012 also marked the last year Trevor Carpenter lived without a leukemia diagnosis. For me, there are many memories from that particular year as I also prepared to stay in Switzerland for an extended period of time. I myself had been battling with a brain tumor diagnosis and my faith laid in Europe to find answers in my quest for the most appropriate treatment. A diagnosis that had put an end to the striving force to create the 2012 Halloween Challenge.

Today I’m fortunate enough to be able to go back in time and bring to life an idea I had for the 2012 Halloween Photo Challenge.

Coming to get ya - Self Portrait

We can all agree that not all silhouettes are spooky and scary. One technique is the blunt approach, include a prop like an ax and you’re headed in the right direction. Since dark surroundings add to the effect, artificial lighting is very often the route to take in order to amplify the overall mood and effect we’re trying to portray.

Home Sweet Home

In a more creative fashion, the entire seen can create the mood in a more complex fashion leaving the unknown less obvious to the human eye…

Sometimes it’s the simple approach that leaves everything to the imagination… You can always inspire yourself from a genius like Hitchcock himself…

DEFINING YOUR CHALLENGE

This is a pretty simple challenge from a photographic approach. Silhouettes are easy to create as long as there’s plenty of light coming from behind your subject. Here’s Wikipedia’s definition of a silhouette.

You can create a color or B&W image. B&W seems to go hand in hand with creating the scarier and spookier elements but color also has its place.

Be creative, the challenge is open to all sorts of interpretations and creative post-processing as long as a silhouette by definition is visible.

For this special challenge, you will have until Halloween to post your images overlapping with next week’s Photo Challenge.

The friendly community guidelines are pretty simple:

  • Post one original photograph to our active community on our Facebook GroupFlickr Group or 500PX group (or all three). Tag the photo:  #10thanniversaryphotochallenge #2018photochallenge #photochallenge #tempusaura
  • The shot should be a new shot you took this week, for the current weekly theme, not something from your back catalog or someone else’s image.
  • Don’t leave home without your camera. Participating in the 2018 Trevor Carpenter Photo Challenge is fun and easy.

About Steve Troletti

I'm a Location Scout, Editorial, Nature, Wildlife and Environmental Photographer based in Malibu, California. I specialize in Nature and Urban Nature photography including Infrared Landscapes. The Bulk of my work takes place in the Los Angeles, California area, Greater Montreal Region, Canada, Switzerland, France and Varese in Northern Italy. Ethical wildlife photography is the main priority and focus of my work. A minimum disturbance of the animals, their habitat and the environment is my top priority. This applies as much to total wilderness areas as it does to urban nature environments. Ongoing education of environmental issues and building awareness for the protection of wildlife and wilderness areas around the world is what drives me to document the beauty that surrounds us.
